Paul Shoesmith

Paul has a wide range of experience of working with schools, suppliers, local authorities and government departments covering all aspects of the use of Information and Communications technology over more than 25 years. During that period he has been at the forefront of technology innovation in education, being among the first to install management information systems, networks, internet solutions, e-mail and learning platforms in schools.

Paul is well known nationally and internationally as an education technology strategy specialist. Since the late 1980s he has helped schools to make the most of their technology investment, from the first school based management information systems, through the introduction of networks, to the development of local authority and regional networks providing the services which schools need. He believes that technology in schools should work first time, every time, for everyone, wherever and whenever they need it.

He spent 18 years working for Birmingham local authority, including designing, building and managing the Birmingham Grid for Learning, connecting all Birmingham’s 450 schools to the Internet and providing e-mail and content services. He then worked for Becta for over 6 years, where he was Director for Technical Strategy. He is now enjoying working directly with schools again, and helping them to realise the benefits of the technology which they have invested in, as well as working with national and international organisations including NEN – The Education Network, and the SIF Association.
